At Digital Marketing Apprentice, we have put together the 5 most important things every digital
marketing apprentice should know about email marketing. With email marketing becoming increasingly
popular within the marketing industry, your emails need to stand out from the ever-expanding
competition. The key thing to think about with all of these 5 points is that the people on the other end
reading your email are humans so you need to think in their shoes about what they want to receive
from you as a company.
- Images are stronger than words
People are more likely to look at pictures than they are a whole reel of text. The image can be anything
visual from an info graphic (see below) or a graph. Opening an email full of text isn’t stimulating for the
readers and they will automatically assume its junk so they’ll delete it. Having something bright, unique,
and interesting is vital to catch your readers’ attention. - People don’t want to scroll
We are a lazy generation; with the average person only spending 8 seconds looking at a brand new
website, the key is to impress your audience by getting straight to the point and explaining the purpose
of the email within the first section of the email. Your lead magnet or sign-up form should be in view
without the need to scroll; if the reader can’t find what to click, they won’t continue to read on. - Optimize your email for all devices
The majority of the population now owns a Smartphone and it is gradually increasing with the number
of people reading their emails on their phone instead of their laptop or PC; we are a busy population so
emails need to be optimized to meet all of our client’s requirements. Also, making your email
compatible with phones, tablets, and desktops improves the layout of your email and reaches a wider
audience instead of just one type of device user. - People can’t say no to a freebie or a good deal
Admit it, if there was someone in the street handing out free chocolate bars or pens or even shopping
vouchers, we wouldn’t say no! Even if you can’t give away anything, offering them a “free newsletter” or
a “free call back” sounds more intriguing than a standard email filled with text and no obvious purpose.
Email marketing is all about catching the eye of potential customers or returning customers that need
an extra push to convince them to visit your website or download an eBook etc. so sending useful or
informative emails can fulfill your reader’s expectations and ensure them that your company is genuine. - Include a call to action
Unless you’re sending out an email newsletter, you should be giving the customer an opportunity to visit
your site or follow through on a squeeze page or a contact form. You need to convert your reader into a
potential customer or else you won’t be gaining anything from the email you have put all of your hard
work into. You can create a squeeze page using Lead Pages and include something free and helpful such
as an eBook or a video tutorial. Giving the reader something free in exchange for a few details means
you have another client on your database but also the reader gets something out of it that they
